Super Bowl? What Super Bowl?

In the interest of full disclosure, I am revealing today that I don't care one fig about professional football. I do like to stay familiar with what goes on with certain college teams, but even then only after a fashion. I'm not a rabid fan of any team except the ones that include my grandsons. I certainly don't care what the Boston Patriots and the New York Giants are doing to one another tonight out in Arizona. I'm sure the results will be available in the newspapers. Even the youth pastor at our church talked about the Super Bowl in his remarks during today's worship service. I guess that makes our church culturally relevant. But I don't have a dog in this fight.

I'm sure this decided lack of interest on my part marks me as practically un-American in certain circles. That's too bad, but unfortunately it can't be helped.

Instead, I leave you with a passage from the Bible to ponder: "...and exercise yourself toward godliness. For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come." (1 Timothy 4:7-8, NKJV)

  1. My husband and I are on your team.....we care not a whit about pro sports. But, our 15-year-old son invited a few friends over to watch the game, and it was fun to hear their banter.

  2. I'm hoping you and yours were not affected by the terrible storms across the south.

  3. We got a lot of heavy rain, but that was about it. North Georgia was under a tornado "watch" for about half a day, but it never was elevated to "warning" status. The three people killed in Alabama were one county over from where my daughter's family lives. I think Tennessee got the worst of it.

  5. First of all, David (Putz), you are a year late with your comment! This post was written in Feb. 2008, not Feb. 2009. I suppose better late than never, though. And second of all, it's not MY Bible quotation, St. Paul said it about 2000 years ago. The ESV (English Standard Version) translation puts it this way: "For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come."

What is it about that passage from the New Testament that upset you so? I'd really like to know.

  7. David, David, not only do you think St. Paul STINKS, but you have also misquoted William Shakespeare's soliloquy from Hamlet. He never said "a week [sic] under trained [sic] body makes cowards of us all" (although that idea might have a certain amount of truth in it). What William Shakespeare had Hamlet say was "CONSCIENCE doth make cowards of us all" and he was talking about the fear of commiting suicide. You remember, "To be or not to be," etc. I do find, however, that I am enjoying your forays into innovative spelling more and more.

Always true to you, darlin’, in my fashion

We are bombarded daily by abbreviations in everyday life, abbreviations that are never explained, only assumed to be understood by everyone...
