The aliens aren’t coming. They’re already here.

So say 20,000 (and increasing every day) “esoterics” gathering near the village of Bugarach, France. According to one of them, a former teacher named Jean (pronounced, in that irritating way the French have, Zhawnh) who lives in a yurt in the forest (you read it here first), the aliens are inside Pic de Bugarach, a sacred mountain near the village. Esoterics reportedly believe that the mountain is home to a race of alien beings who (a) like to sail their spaceships on a huge interior mountain lake and (b) will emerge to rescue the gathered humans and transport them to a new civilization.

Just so you know, here is the mountain in question:

I’m a bit fuzzy on the details, but it all has something to do with the fact that the Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012, and certain people have decided that the end of the world will occur on that date. I mean, the Mayans have never been wrong before, have they??

Here (3:14) is a segment that aired on CNN.

“The apocalypse we believe in is the end of a certain world and the beginning of another, a new spiritual world,” Zhawnh said, refusing to give his last name because of the increasing local controversy. “The year 2012 is the end of a cycle of suffering,” he said, adding that Bugarach is “one of the major chakras of the earth, a place devoted to welcome the energies of tomorrow.”

As Bill Cosby once said in a skit about Noah when God told him it was going to rain for 40 days and 40 nights, “Riiight.”

The next step will be up to the aliens.

  1. Riiiiight. The world is really ending, which is why we are all stoically marching towards death by going to work everyday and paying our bills on time. If the world is really ending I'm going to Jamaica man.

  3. This puts me in mind of The End of the World sketch featuring a young Peter Cook and Dudley Moore:

'How will it be, this end of which you have spoken, Brother Enim?'

'Well, it will be, as 'twere a mighty rending in the sky, you see, and the mountains shall sink, you see, and the valleys shall rise, you see, and great shall be the tumult thereof.'

'Will the veil of the temple be rent in twain?'

'The veil of the temple will be rent in twain about two minutes before we see the sign of the manifest flying beast-head in the sky.'

'And will there be a mighty wind, Brother Enim?'

'Certainly there will be a mighty wind, if the word of God is anything to go by...'

You can read the rest of the script here.

  6. Hey there, David, I wondered whether this post would bring forth a comment from you. Sorry to hear about Dan Bush of Clover, even at this late date.

Maybe the aliens were members of the U.S. Air Force???

  7. Didn't mean to ignore Ian and Alex, sorry.

I remember Beyond the Fringe, also That Was The Week That Was. One of them had Dudley Moore.

Alex would have to make his maiden visit when I posted about aliens. I hope this is not the last we see of him.

  9. Putz, sometimes you have to take the bitter with the sweet. But look on the bright side: I'm still leaving an occasional comment.

  10. I am sending this from Buggerache South West France. Today I explored a little known cave which led into the heart of the holy mountain. There I encountered dozens of aliens - well I call them aliens but they looked more like gnomes to me. I asked them if they were going to end the world in December and the leader, who was in his mid seventies with a silver goatee beard and moustache and wire framed spectacles, said the human race clearly didn't need any help ending the world - we're managing very nicely by ourselves.

Now excuse me while I go and scratch my base root chakra!

  11. n spite of what you wrote, Y.P., the place is spelled Bugarach and it is pronounced BOO-guh-rahsh. I am 71, not in my mid-seventies. I do not have a goatee of any kind these days, let alone a silver one.

On the other hand, I do wear wire-framed spectacles and I agree with what the alien/gnome told you.

One last thing: when you are finished playing with your base root chakra, please wash your hands with soap and water before returning to your computer keyboard.

  13. Mt. Shasta is another center for such thinking; a race of super beings lives in it too.
