When you’re worried and you can’t sleep...

...count your blessings instead of sheep, and you’ll fall asleep counting your blessings. So goes the old song.

If that doesn’t work, try counting squares.

How many do you see?

[Editor’s note. The correct answer, my friend, is not blowing in the wind. It can be found in the comments section. --RWP]

  1. I can see thirty five. If I win, what is my prize? Hopefully not one of those phallic balloons!

  2. Aha, I would of counted the squares, but I'm started to drift off into another well deserved doggy nap....

  3. Yorkshire Pudding, fortunately 35 is the wrong answer.

klahanie (Gary), I mean Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet superstar, it is a proven fact that a doggy cannot have too many naps.

  4. So far we have guesses of 35, 27, and 28. These are all incorrect.

I will just tell you flat out right now that I see 40 squares. Later, if you like, I will tell you how I arrived at that figure.

  5. "Later, if you like, I will tell you how I arrived at that figure." I do like! How much longer must we wait?

  6. One and all, the correct answer is 40.

    There are:

    8 teeny-tiny ones,

18 1x1 squares (including the two offset ones that are composed of 4 teeny-tiny ones each),

    9 2x2 squares,

    4 3x3 squares, and

1 overall 4x4 square (the perimeter of the figure).

    8 + 18 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 40

I trust that a fun time was had by all....

  8. Putz (David), of course you should count the teeny tiny ones. Squares are squares regardless of their size. Don't be a sore loser.

  10. I only got thirty-two... sigh.

Happens to coincide with the age at which I was first prescribed reading glasses. Probably not a coincidence. Since then the maximum number of squares I can presumably count at one time is stuck on 32.

Ho hum. Back to the Christmas baking. Gingerbread biscuits next. Kitchen smells glorious.

  11. Elizabeth Stanforth-Sharpe, a cyberfriend in the U.K. who likes to respond to other people's blogs by posting on her own blog rather than by leaving comments on other people's blogs, reports that she counted 40 squares.

I thought you would want to know.

  12. There are 56 - I have been over this a few times. You have to count squares within squares, within squares, etc...

  13. lonelyhearted (what a sad name), of course you have to count squares within squares within squares, but there cannot possibly be 56 unless you are counting some squares more than once. Are you sure you're not doing that?
