Sometimes diversionary tactics are necessary

To take your minds off tragedies at home and abroad and all enemies foreign and domestic, see how well you do on the following test. There are ten questions. You need only four correct answers to pass:

1. How long did the Hundred Years’ War last?

2. Which country makes Panama hats?

3. From which animal do we get cat gut?

4. In which month do Russians celebrate the October Revolution?

5. What is a camel’s hair brush made of?

6. The Canary Islands are named after what animal?

7. What was King George VI’s first name?

8. What color is a purple finch?

9. Where are Chinese gooseberries from?

10. What is the color of the black box in a commercial airplane?

And now, here are the answers.

1. 116 years; 2. Ecuador; 3. Sheep and horses; 4. November;
5. Squirrel fur; 6. Dogs; 7. Albert; 8. Crimson; 9. New Zealand; 10. Orange.

What do you mean, you failed?

Me, too. I got exactly one answer right. I knew King George VI’s first name, and that was it.

My thanks go out to Linda H., my sister-in-law in Texas, for sending me this test.

  1. These were tricky questions. I only got one right, the last one. I knew that the company where I worked introduced the first FAA-approved flight data recorder (commonly called a black box) in 1958 and that usually they are orange or other bright color, but not black, so they can be retrieved easily.

  2. Five; 2,5,6,8 & 10. 50% is not much of a score, so I guess I got an "F."

  3. I hate to boast but I got all of the answers right before I saw the solutions. Would it be possible to make your occasional quizzes a little more challenging for those of us who are intellectually gifted? I'm just saying....Even George W. Bush could have had a good go at this quiz! Regards, YP

  4. Vagabonde, I know you live one county over from me. I'm guessing that you worked for Lockheed, but I could be wrong.

Pat - Arkansas, where four is passing, five is above average, so I'd say you got a B. Also, I noticed that four of the five questions you answered correctly were even numbers. How odd.

Yorky Poo, you're right. I must take into consideration the intellectually gifted a little more in the future. Actually, I don't believe you about getting all of the answers right.
