I know what let’s do! For old times’ sake...

...let’s watch that video of Susan Boyle auditioning for Britain’s Got Talent (5:50) one more time....

It wasn’t all that long ago, actually. Her audition took place on April 11, 2009. So a little over four years ago, no one had ever heard of that little collection of villages in Scotland.

But since then, a lot of water has gone over the dam/under the bridge (pick one).

To take just one example, the phrase “Boston massacre” now has an entirely new meaning that has absolutely nothing to do with March 5, 1770.

To take another example, we have (and by “we have” I mean that David Letterman has) unearthed, finally, one of those dreaded Banjos of Mass Destruction (BMD) (4:24) and that starts with B and that rhymes with P and that stands for (let’s say it together, class):

POOL (4:58).

The common thread running through these videos should be obvious by now: Ways to make one’s parents proud.

Is the world in a downward spiral, or what?

To clear your head of that depressing prospect, why don’t you take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity and watch this video of a great deal of falling water that involves neither a dam nor a bridge, while (British, whilst) simultaneously brushing up on your French, listening to the strains of Richard Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries (some of that classical music that Hilltophomesteader hates so much), and ending with a lovely orchestral rendition of “Over the Rainbow” that includes an actual rainbow (4:09)?

Putz would have loved this post. Blogland misses him.

  1. Who's this Elaine Boyle? Susan Boyle's sister?
And, maybe I missed it, but what do you know about Putz? He left some truly "off the wall" remarks on your blog and we need people like that to put cats amongst the pigeons so to speak. Where's he gone?

  2. Watching the banjo boys reminded me a lot of the first tv appearance of the Bee Gees in 1963. Who knows where your trio will be in 40 years time!

  3. Y.P., I guess my 72-year-old had what we call a "brain freeze"...my subconscious must have been thinking of Elaine Paige. Thank you for pointing out the error. I have corrected it.

Shooting/Ian, now you have me trying to figure out which one is Barry, which one is Robin, and which one is Maurice. Thanks a lot.

  4. P.S. to Yorkshire Pudding, Putz (a.k.a. David Barlow of Tooele, Utah) has not put up a post since December 19 or responded to a comment on his own blog since January 21. I think his wife, Karmalee, who never liked him to blog in the first place, must have finally convinced him to stop altogether. I was never sure whether Putz was sliding into dementia or just quirky like the rest of us. I do hope he is neither ill nor dead.

  5. P.S. to Shooting Parrots/Ian, I meant in the David Letterman video, of course. I know who's who in the BeeGees video. But I do wonder why a fiddler, a guitarist and a banjo player (non-singers all) would remind you of the singing BeeGees.

  6. Actually I said I hate spiders and just don't love classical music. I can definitely appreciate all the skill those musicians have but it sort of puts me to sleep. I do like Over the Rainbow (who doesn't?) and now, of course, I had to go read all about the BeeGees so I haven't even made the morning coffee yet! I never stayed up late enough to watch David Letterman and we haven't had TV for probably 15 or 20 years.....

  8. Hilltophomesteader (HH), it is always nice to hear from you. Do you have a blog? Your profile is a bit sparse in the detail department. Judging from your few comments, I think you show great promise as a blogger, if I do say so myself.

  9. I do not have a blog. If that is a compliment, I accept! If it is not, it wouldn't be the first time someone thought I was a bit....unique! I enjoy YOUR blog a lot! Usually ;-).
