Sometimes it pays to have good peripheral vision

Here is a lovely vocal offertory featuring a young woman named Courtney Cumberland, who sang it at Due West United Methodist Church in Marietta, Georgia, on October 6, 2013. The piece is “Pie Jesu” from John Rutter’s work, Requiem.

“Pie Jesu” at Due West Methodist Church, Marietta, GA, October 6, 2013

Here is a translation from the Latin:

Merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus
who takes away the sins of the world
Grant them rest, grant them rest,
Lamb of God, Lamb of God, Lamb of God, Lamb of God
who takes away the sins of the world
Grant them rest, grant them rest, everlasting, everlasting rest

I do not know Courtney Cumberland or the man playing the piano. However, I do know the man playing the soprano saxophone at the right edge of the screen. Sometimes you get a glimpse of his profile.
He is my son.

Now you can go back and watch that video again.

  1. Thanks. I watched it through and left a comment on You Tube. You will be pleased to learn that my comment was not "Brague for Mayor!"

  2. This was lovely, but I wish it had been from your church, which I don't think it was. Goodness knows I wouldn't want to press you to put personal material on your blog (not that you would do so if I did), but I have wondered what your church is like, and I would dearly love to see you in action playing your music.

  3. Snowbrush, no, the church my son attends is about an hour and a half away from the one we attend. I wish the music in my church was half as moving as the music in his. But, alas, it is not.

  4. Yorkshire Pudding, "Brague for Mayor!" does have a certain ring to it, though, doesn't it?

    Elephant's Child, you're welcome.

  5. i have heard this wonderful piece many times but never one so recent as a week ago done by a beautiful girl with fat knees and beautful voice with strange georgia accents, we seem to have similar tastes in music eXCEPT for john denver and willie nelson><><<>but we were both cuute as 6 year old boys

  6. Putz, I was infinitely cuter than you as a 6-year-old boy (I just know it without ever having seen your picture), Latin with a Georgia accent is not strange at all, and the size of a beautiful girl's knees would never be a subject for public comment among Southern gentlemen.

  7. RHYMES WITH...Another hiatus. Please let us know you are okay. I guess you have been busy with your mayoral campaign - leafleting neighbours, TV interviews etc. so please forgive me for any irritation this comment may have caused you.

  8. "Another hiatus."

Oh, great, now he has a hernia! Maybe it's time we started placing bets on how long the old boy will last.

  9. YORKSHIRE PUD, I am okay. The mayoral campaign is going swimmingly. So far I have swum the Etowah, the Ooltewah, and the Coosa Rivers. Angling for votes, you might say.

Snowbrush, rumors of my having either a hiatus or a hernia are greatly exaggerated.

  10. "rumors of my having either a hiatus or a hernia are greatly exaggerated."

Yorkie said that you had a hiatus hernia. Of course, I knew he meant hiatal hernia, but now that I'm catching flies with honey, I didn't say nothing.

  11. Snowbrush, see, that's how wrong information gets out. Yorkie never said I had a hiatus hernia. He only said I had a hiatus. Then you said he said I had a hernia. Neither one of you ever said hiatal. I truss everything is now clear.

  12. I think he meant to say hiatus hernia, but he left off the hernia part. It happens all the time online.
