Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who lives at Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, saw his shadow when he left his burrow this morning, which means Pennsylvania will have six more weeks of winter and the folk there will not enjoy an early spring.

On the other hand, General Beauregard Lee, the groundhog who lives at The Yellow River Game Ranch in Lilburn, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta, did not see his shadow when he left his burrow this morning, which means that Georgia will not have six more weeks of winter and the folk here will enjoy an early spring.

There is just one thing wrong with this annual prognosticative nonsense, meteorologically speaking.

It is much too late in Georgia to have an early spring.

I remember a year when the forsythia bushes and jonquils burst forth in golden splendor (Brit., splendour) in early January. If you would kindly check your calendar before proceeeding, you will discover that it is now February.

Talk about locking the barn door after the horse is gone.

  1. And so it is - February.
I've learned two new things about today so far in my blog reading. The groundhog came out in two places and two teams played in the Super Bowl. I have no idea who won yet but I'm sure as I continue on someone will let me know. So, who needs newspapers or tv's when you have blog friends.

  2. I was not watching the Super Bowl. No, I was not. But I have learned that the Seattle Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos 43-8.

  3. Gobblers Knob sounds like a very rude place! I think they should change its name to something more respectable and honourable (American Sp - "honorable" Ha! Ha!)...such as Bragueville or Pudding Heights.
By the way, I watched the Superbowl live here in England. Do they really need to wear motorcycle helmets? Our rugby players don't though a few choose to wear scrum caps to protect their ears.

  4. Being British the following "Gobblers Knob" will be enough to keen me chuckling, 'fnar-fnar-ing'and with the odd 'Oooh Matron!' thrown in to boot for a good week or so, if not considerably longer.

  5. Hmmm. Here we look out the window each morning and determine if Winter is still here. Spring will arrive whenever it does. I rarely speak meteorologically, if ever, and here in Doylesville we spell it proceeding rather than proceeeding. I'm not sure if we have groundhogs here (didn't feel like googling it) but we do have snow today, frozen pipes in the barn and arthritis. My vote: Let's skip Spring and go straight for warm Summer sunshine!!!
