Thank goodness the astronomy books said 4 billion years. If they had said 2 billion years I would be worried (jk, lol).rhymeswithplaguehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10870439618129001633noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286321024842109960.post-33827301661273499012022-01-09T12:42:01.690-05:002022-01-09T12:42:01.690-05:00Last time I looked at astronomy books I got the im...Last time I looked at astronomy books I got the impression that the sun will grow so large as to swallow up Mercury and Venus and possibly the Earth in around 4 billion years AP. I, for example, am a confirmed member of the Church of England. I'm not sure if there is a way of voluntarily leaving the Church. I know you can be thrown out. Certainly over half of people answering the UK census claim to belong to no religion.Graham Edwardshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11196744947133121475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286321024842109960.post-16234876434428096672022-01-09T09:35:22.117-05:002022-01-09T09:35:22.117-05:00Graham, i did cut and paste the BP definitions and...Graham, i did cut and paste the BP definitions and the 100 video game titles and the Bible passages. The "someone" you referred to was James Ussher (1581 – 1656), Archbishop of the Church of Ireland. Aaccording to Wikipedia, he is most famous today for his chronology that sought to establish the time and date of the creation as "the entrance of the night preceding the 23rd day of October... the year before Christ 4004"; that is, around 6 pm on 22 October 4004 BC. You were off by 19 days. I looked it up. I knew it wasn't 4 October as I would have remembered that date since my mother died on 4 October in 1957.

It's always good to hear from you. I put in the Bible verses in an attempt to show the difficulty of believing contradictory things.

I suppose I have a contrarian streak, but whenever I hear estimates of how many millions and billions of Christians there are in the world, I think of one of the sayings of Jesus: "Enter in at the strait gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads unto destruction, and many there be that go in thereat; but strait is the gate and narrow is the way that leads to life, and few there be that find it."

Not saying I agree with Bishop Ussher. Not at all! rhymeswithplaguehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10870439618129001633noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286321024842109960.post-69743631345227715092022-01-09T08:11:05.512-05:002022-01-09T08:11:05.512-05:00I hope you cut and pasted. Even if I were not atheist I would have some difficulty believing one version of part of a set of writings theoretically accepted by about one third of the population of the planet (two thirds in the USA). However the view of the interpreters in the form of various religions have long argued over the date of the origin of the earth. I notice, though that 4 October 4004 BC that someone worked out is not mentioned any more.Graham Edwardshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11196744947133121475noreply@blogger.com
