Hello, world! This blog began on September 28, 2007, and so far nobody has come looking for me
with tar and feathers.
On my honor, I will do my best not to bore you. All comments are welcome
as long as your discourse is civil and your language is not blue.
Happy reading, and come back often!
And whether my cup is half full or half empty, fill my cup, Lord.

I didn’t even mention the Iron Bowl. And that’s just college football. There are also all of those professional football teams trying to defeat one another in playoff games so they can play in the Super Bowl.
When I was a kid, there were just four college football bowl games (Rose, Cotton, Sugar, and Orange) and just three channels on TV (ABC, NBC, and CBS) and gasoline cost only 20 cents per gallon.
In other words, I come from a world that never existed or at least has Gone With The Wind. Here is a photo of someone from my part of the country who went like the wind. Can you name him?

Remembrance of things past (show-biz edition) and a few petty gripes
Some performing groups came in twos (the Everly Brothers, the Smothers Brothers, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Steve Lawrence and Edyie Gormé, ...
Ye gods and little fishes!
ReplyDeleteWhat's next? The "Tidy Bowl?"
All I can say is... Yikes!(I always thought football was a venue for bands to perform, but now they don't even do that at halftime - so, really, what's the point?)Okay, so as usual, there WAS more I could say, after all!
ReplyDeletePat - The Tidy Bowl! Now, that's funny!
ReplyDeleteTracie - Bands *do* still perform at halftime, but the performances aren't shown on television any more because the time is so sorely needed to run more commercial advertising and to let the jocks and jock wannabes rehash all the plays from the first half.
Your welcome to quote or use my blog anytime.
ReplyDeleteOh, my......what an overflowing bowl of Bowls! The Outback Bowl is the only one I'm interested in, and we won't even be able to watch it, because we don't have cable.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing we'll watch only 7 or 8 of them, plus all the professional playoffs.
ReplyDeleteLaughing my head off.
Thanks, Dr. John for letting me use your words in a future post.
ReplyDeleteJeannelle and Ruth, I knew this post would get a rise out of the ladies!
The name of the football player, by the way -- a legend in Georgia -- is Herschel Walker.
Truthfully this makes my head swim. My husband and son revel in this stuff. I go in the other room.
ReplyDeletei was getting all excited for the sugar bowl when all of a sudden byu lost and burst my bubble...so now deflated i bumble through the bowl, sppooon and fork games
ReplyDeleteisn't that lightning williams of the mars twikight team?????
ReplyDeleteMore comments! I'm always amazed when people actually read my posts!
ReplyDeleteEgghead (Vonda) - It makes my head swim too, although I do enjoy college football. Never really cared for the professional variety. Those guys should get real jobs.
Putz - Sorry about BYU. As for Lightning Williams of the Mars Twikight team, never heard of him or them. That picture is of Herschel Walker, University of Georgia great, winner of the 1982 Heisman trophy. He played for 12 seasons for various teams in the NFL.
Here's a factoid for you: The Heisman Trophy was named for John Heisman, coach at Georgia Tech (not to be confused with Georgia) when when they beat Cumberland College by a score of 222-0 in 1916?
I didn't mean to sound like a Valley girl in that last comment. I should have said:
ReplyDelete...in 1916.
