Adrian Ward! Calling Adrian Ward!

...or anyone else who might be able to identify these fungi/mushrooms/toadstools/whatever-they-are that suddenly appeared in my yard this week after some rather heavy rains.

The first morning there were four, all of which shriveled in the sun and were gone by mid-afternoon. The next day nine more appeared, then 16 on the third day. I try to ignore them, but they aren't going away. In fact, they're multiplying. By the fourth day, as shown in the photograph below, there were 35.

I fear I am being invaded by alien creatures who are planning my demise, so a reply is requested at your earliest convenience.

Thank you for your prompt consideration, and may the Force be with you.

  1. I hate to tell you this but you are dreaming that you are in Fantasia.

  2. Emma Springfield, you made me laugh, LOL! I was thinking more of a combination of The Manchurian Candidate and certain battle scenes from Lord of the Rings . But I know the scenes you are talking about from Fantasia — and now I’m laughing again!

  3. As I am not Professor Adrian Ward, I am unable to identify these mushrooms for you. I wonder if they are edible? Why not fry em up and have them for breakfast? If they make you vomit or suffer from severe stomach cramps then you will know that they are not suitable for human consumption.

  4. Liberty Caps I think. They are indeed magical and will send you on a wonderful journey.
They only seem to grow on grass and not on trees in clumps like most of the Bonnet Caps. Have fun IDing them Fungi can be the very devil to name. A fact not helped by mycologists changing their minds about twice a year.

  5. They might be magic mushrooms! We went collecting mushrooms a while back and I'm of no use when it comes to identifying them, but they look very sweet and fairy-like. Fantasia indeed *laughs*.
