Round and round she goes

...and where she stops, nobody knows. This phrase may have originally referred to a proverbial "wheel of fortune" (no one seems to know for sure), but in my post today it refers to our home planet, Mother Earth, good old terra firma. Our terra is actually not all that firma. Not only is over 70% of our planet's surface covered with water (aqua non firmam), but also deep inside its inner core it is hotter than Hades, 5,430°C (9,800°F) in fact.

So round and round indeed she goes, spinning once a day on her axis at a tilt from vertical of 23.5° (a different kind of degree from the kind used for temperature). She also makes another kind of rotation once each year, orbiting around the nearest star, which at 93,000,000 miles is exactly one astronomical unit (AU) away. We have just completed another of these rotations.

But you knew that.

Many people are concerned that the human race has caused, is causing, and must take measures to stop causing climate changes that threaten Earth's very existence. But I remember what God promised Noah in Genesis 8:22 -- "While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease." God even set a rainbow in the cloud as a sign that he would never again destroy the human race by water.

But as the American author James Baldwin reminded us in his book title The Fire Next Time, I also remember that there is another idea mentioned in the Bible too. No less a personage than good old St. Peter himself wrote, "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt wirh fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." (2 Peter 3:10) and repeated it a couple of verses later, "...the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat" (v. 12). Whether that refers to worldwide climate change/forest fires, nuclear war, or a comet or huge asteroid crashing into us has yet to be determined. It gives one pause. But then St. Peter added, "Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness."(v. 13), so a third idea is also mentioned in the Bible.

You may agree or disagree, but the point is that while we wait to find out we have a choice. We can either worry about it or we can concentrate on video games. Actually, those two things are not mutually exclusive. We can do both.

Accordingly, here are two articles for your perusal:

"How Humanity Came To Contemplate Its Possible Extinction: A Timeline"

"The Top 100 Video Games of All Time:

A little perspective is in order. By "of All Time" is meant, basically, in the last 55 years. Although a patent was issued in the U.S. for "a Cathode-ray tube amusement device" as early as 1947, the first real video game was table tennis in 1966. By way of contrast, the first date in the other article is "c. 75,000BP". I'm not sure what is meant by BP but I'm fairly certain it doesn't stand for either British Petroleum or blood pressure.

and the Number One Video Game of "All Time" -- tah-dah -- is:

1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I do not play video games, which probably explains why I have never heard of about 95 of the titles in that list.

Whether you read both articles, or just one of them, or neither of them, it is still true that round and round she goes, and where she stops, nobody knows.

  1. I hope you cut and pasted. Even if I were not atheist I would have some difficulty believing one version of part of a set of writings theoretically accepted by about one third of the population of the planet (two thirds in the USA). However the view of the interpreters in the form of various religions have long argued over the date of the origin of the earth. I notice, though that 4 October 4004 BC that someone worked out is not mentioned any more.

  2. Graham, i did cut and paste the BP definitions and the 100 video game titles and the Bible passages. The "someone" you referred to was James Ussher (1581 – 1656), Archbishop of the Church of Ireland. Aaccording to Wikipedia, he is most famous today for his chronology that sought to establish the time and date of the creation as "the entrance of the night preceding the 23rd day of October... the year before Christ 4004"; that is, around 6 pm on 22 October 4004 BC. You were off by 19 days. I looked it up. I knew it wasn't 4 October as I would have remembered that date since my mother died on 4 October in 1957.

It's always good to hear from you. I put in the Bible verses in an attempt to show the difficulty of believing contradictory things.

I suppose I have a contrarian streak, but whenever I hear estimates of how many millions and billions of Christians there are in the world, I think of one of the sayings of Jesus: "Enter in at the strait gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads unto destruction, and many there be that go in thereat; but strait is the gate and narrow is the way that leads to life, and few there be that find it."

Not saying I agree with Bishop Ussher. Not at all!

    1. The number of people of any particular faith has to be very approximate. I, for example, am a confirmed member of the Church of England. I'm not sure if there is a way of voluntarily leaving the Church. I know you can be thrown out. Certainly over half of people answering the UK census claim to belong to no religion.

  3. Last time I looked at astronomy books I got the impression that the sun will grow so large as to swallow up Mercury and Venus and possibly the Earth in around 4 billion years AP.

    1. Tasker, I have just enough brain cells still functioning to figure out that AP must mean After Present. Thank goodness the astronomy books said 4 billion years. If they had said 2 billion years I would be worried (jk, lol).
