Funny, we all act like monkeys sometimes

Yorkshire Pudding, bless his black heart, has introduced me to "The BOB Song". I don't know how it escaped my attention before, but it did. Here is Willie Nelson's recording of it for your edification consternation listening pleasure:

The BOB Song (4:15)

Just in case you (a) never click on links or (b) had difficulty understanding all of Willie's impeccable diction, here are the lyrics:

The BOB Song

Well I once knew a pirate named BOB
B-O-B Bob was a drunken old slob
B-O-B Bob, 'bout as dumb as a rock
But Bob, he made it to the top

He said, You swing from your tree and I'll swing from mine
You have your lemons and I'll have my limes
Funny we all act like monkeys sometimes
So you swing from your tree and I'll swing from mine
I'll swing from mine

He said, I'd rather make love than war
And I'd rather have millions than to ever be poor
But I'd rather be happy than to have any more,
Guess I'm a little tangled in the vine

Oh, You swing from your tree and I'll swing from mine
You have your lemons and I'll have my limes
Funny, we all act like monkeys sometimes
So you swing from your tree and I'll swing from mine
I'll swing from mine

Funny, we all act like monkeys sometimes
You swing from your tree and I'll swing from mine
You have your whiskey and I'll drink my wine
You save your dollar and I'll spend my dime
You swing from your tree and I'll swing from mine
We'll all be happy sometimes
And we'll all be happy sometimes

(End of song)

  1. 1. It seems like a mediocre song. It would be fun to sing. I suppose if one were looking for deep meaning It can be found. Still it is not great art.
    2. I see no correlation between the song and the theory of evolution.
    3. You are a sort of live and let live kind of guy.
    4. Who knows?

    1. Emma, I don't think any deep meaning can be found in the song. In everything else we agree.

  2. 1. Good. It's not a serious song, but I like that it talks about how we can all be different and that's Okay. I can see Willie Nelson singing and understanding it.
    2. Not
    3. Does not. But - I think the song describes a person that marches to his own tune and that part does describe RWP.
    4. I doubt it. ; )

    1. Bonnie, we agree! Except that I hope this post is my blog's nadir....I'm only half joking.

  3. 1. This is a really good song.
    2. This is more evidence that Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution is true.
    3. This song does not describe dear rhymeswithplague to a T. Sadly, it fails to refer to his black and white golfing shoes, his colourful bermuda shorts and his green University of Alabama T-shirt.
    4. This blog has reached a new zenith with this praiseworthy post.
    5. The happenings in the Swedish hotel all those years ago are what the 45th president would call "fake news" - even though there are photographs.

    1. Neil, not only do we disagree about almost everything, you didn't even mention that I said you had a black heart. The University of Alabama's color is crimson, not green. But we can still be long-distance friends.

    2. Though I have never seen it, I reckon that my heart looks the same as every other healthy heart. Not black but bloody like a lump of meat with veins and arteries and stuff like that. Admittedly, not the most attractive thing to behold. Though crimson is of course the colour one would normally associate with The University of Alabama, the school's T-shirts are available in a range of colours. Just sayin'.

    3. Neil, I stand corrected. One should not try to engage one's betters in repartee. One will always come up holding the short end of the stick. One repents in sackcloth and ashes for even bringing the subject up. One is pulling your leg even as we speak.
