According to one source, the "seven deadly sins" (also called the "seven cardinal vices") are lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride.
Their opposites, the "seven cardinal virtues", are chastity, temperance, charity (or generosity), diligence, patience, gratitude, and humility.
Why bring these up now?, you may ask.
I'll tell you why.
Because we need less of the first list and more of the second in our world today, that's why.
Here are 14 Latin words: humilitas, luxuria, gratia, gula, patientia, avaritia, industria, acedia, caritas, ira, moderatio, invidia, superbia, castitas.
Can you match the Latin words with their English equivalents in the two lists?
*Note. The three parts into which my blog is divided -- I can't speak for other blogs -- are the facts, the fun, and the frustration. You heard it here first.
My personal frustration at the moment is that since New Blogger came along I have lost the ability to insert a photograph into a post. All helpful hints will be appreciated.
Hello, world! This blog began on September 28, 2007, and so far nobody has come looking for me
with tar and feathers.
On my honor, I will do my best not to bore you. All comments are welcome
as long as your discourse is civil and your language is not blue.
Happy reading, and come back often!
And whether my cup is half full or half empty, fill my cup, Lord.

Post-election thoughts
Here are some mangled aphorisms I have stumbled upon over the years: 1. If you can keep your head when all anout you are losing thei...
Oh dear, I haven't done a post with the new blogger so haven't tried adding a photo. I hope you figure it out and share here how you did it. Yes, we need more of the second list in our world today. Too many are focusing solely on anger and not at all on the virtues.
ReplyDeleteTerra, right now I have no clue how to do it.
DeleteHave you got an icon at the top that looks like a couple of little mountains (third from right)?
ReplyDeleteTasker, no.
DeleteIn Blogger dashboard scroll down in the lefthand column and click revert to legacy blogger, if you haven't worked it out in the next few weeks then I'll either link to a Youtube tutorial or do one for you.
ReplyDeleteAdrian, I haven't seen Revert to Legacy Blogger in several weeks.
DeleteTry using Chrome as a browser.
DeleteAdrian, I get the same screen whether I use Microsoft Edge, Chrome, or Firefox. I am bamboozled.
DeleteWe definitely need more of the seven virtues.
ReplyDeleteEmma, from your mouth to God's ear.
DeleteWe do indeed need more virtue - individually and collectively.
ReplyDeleteI would like to hear more about responsibilities and less about rights too.
I struggle with new blogger too. Preparing my post for tomorrow I discovered I could have photos OR text. So I reverted to legacy blogger. Again.
Sue, I don't seem to have a choice of text or photos. I can do text. The path to photo insertion enlightenment eludes me. Nor do I have the "Revert to legacy blogger" line showing anywhere either. I think I will go out in the garden and eat worss.
DeleteWe really need the characteristics you list. This would make the world a much better place. I found out how to get my photos on the blog but I couldn't tell you. You have to play around with it.
ReplyDeleteRed in Alberta or Saskatchewan or wherever you are, I can't remember, please, pretty please with sugar on top, try to tell me how you got your photos on the blog. I would be ever so grateful.
DeleteI wonder if different people have different versions of Blogger because I don't have that "Revert to legacy blogger" choice on mine that others are talking about.
Thanks for the reminder...if there be any virtue...I will think on these things...
ReplyDeleteMuch better use of my thoughts than all the craziness in the world today.
For the Biblically illiterate, Kathy has made reference to Philippians 4:8, "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."
DeleteIf I had been thinking more clearly I would have included that reference in the post. Thank you, Kathy!
Vices, virtues and New Blogger. What a combination. I only have access to my Android mobile right now, so for fun I thought I would try posting to New Blogger. Lots of patience required, not a lot available. Wrath puts in an appearance. It seems I might need an app. Who knew? Looking here and looking there I see my major problem is I can't see all of my dashboard, only the bottom line. This makes post to the body of the post nigh impossible.
ReplyDeleteI think I will press the pause button on this brilliant idea.
Alphie
Alphie Soup somewhere in Australia, the Latin word for wrath is ira, form which we get the word irate. I wish someone had tried to match the words.
DeleteWhen you pressed the pause button you also seem to have pressed the return key several times there.
Yes, it seems I did something strange there. Most of the time I am commenting on my phone while propped up in bed.
DeleteThis leads to the cursor running wild from time to time.

I was going to tell you how to add a photo but I see Adrian tried and can't do better than him.
ReplyDeleteI studied Latin at school for a short while and did quite well at it but my main memory of Latin is when the teacher caught me reading under the desk and i said I was already finished my work (which, of course, I was not)
That didn't go well :)
kylie, adding a photo in New Blogger continues to be beyond my ken. When my uncle was disgusted with something he would speak in Latin, saying "sum, esse, fui". I thought he was saying "sum, esse, phooey until the day the Latin teacher introduced us to the principal parts of the verb "to be" and I laughed out loud.
DeleteYou have taught me something today my good fellow. Regarding the seven cardinal virtues I'm fine with five of them but not too good with chastity and temperance. Adding a photo with New Blogger is quite straightforward but resizing it and adding a caption is less easy.
ReplyDeleteGo to New Post. Then go to the "Insert Image" icon which is between the "Insert Link" and "Insert Video" icons. "Insert Image" has a little arrow to the right of it. This takes you to a short drop down menu. You will probably want to pick "Upload from Computer" which then leads you to any photos you have stored within your computer - just like before. Click on your selected picture and loading will commence. I hope you have found this guidance helpful. I believe I was exhibiting four of the cardinal virtues - charity and patience, diligence and humility.
Neil, to think of you as virtuous is a stretch, but I'll do my best. Thank you for your comment. You and Adrian and Tasker have now shown me why I cannot insert a photograph (I do not have several of the editing function icons on my blogger screen, including the very ones you mentioned ("Insert Link" and "Insert Video" and "Insert Image"). My ongoing dilemma is HOW DO I GET THEM???? Adrian has suggested that I sign completely out of Blogger and then sign back in and maybe I'll get a different version. I'm going to try that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your help! I notice by your own count that you still lack chastity, temperance, and gratitude.
